# Agent tools

> Define permitted actions for your Voice Agent.

Voice Agents can use tools during a live conversation. Tools belong to an agent and have a declared `type`, `name`, `description`, JSON `parameters` schema, and optional execution settings.

The current tool types are `builtin` and `webhook`. A webhook tool can also define an `endpoint_url` and `timeout_ms`.

## Create a tool

```bash theme={null}
curl -sS -X POST "https://api.leamout.com/v1/voice-agents/$VOICE_AGENT_ID/tools/" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $LEAMOUT_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "type": "webhook",
    "name": "lookup_order",
    "description": "Look up the status of an order.",
    "parameters": {
      "type": "object",
      "properties": {
        "order_id": {"type": "string"}
      },
      "required": ["order_id"]
    },
    "endpoint_url": "https://your-service.example.com/tools/lookup-order"
  }'
```

Tool definitions are validated before they can be used. Grant only the external permissions each tool needs, and validate incoming tool requests at your own endpoint.

## Manage tools

* `GET /v1/voice-agents/{voice_agent_id}/tools/` lists an agent's tools.
* `PATCH /v1/voice-agents/{voice_agent_id}/tools/{tool_id}` updates a definition.
* `POST /v1/voice-agents/{voice_agent_id}/tools/{tool_id}/rotate-signing-secret` rotates a signing secret.
* `DELETE /v1/voice-agents/{voice_agent_id}/tools/{tool_id}` removes a tool.

A model request does not bypass the configured tool policy: execution is validated by the runtime and tied to the active agent session.
